The athletic brand On is being taken to court after dozens of customers claimed that their sneakers squeak so loudly that it’s causing them public embarrassment.
The Lawsuit
According to NBC News, a class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Portland on October 9, accusing On of selling sneakers with design flaws that lead to “embarrassingly loud” noises. The complaint points to the company’s signature “CloudTec” technology, which features uniquely shaped holes covering the external and bottom surfaces of the shoes. Plaintiffs say the materials rub together while walking or running, creating high-pitched squeaks that can be heard in quiet public spaces like offices, gyms, or classrooms.
About 11 styles are mentioned in the lawsuit, including the Cloud 5, Cloud 6, CloudMonster, and Cloudrunner. While the shoes are marketed for comfort and high performance, buyers say the sound is anything but discreet. Many described the constant squeaking as “embarrassing and disruptive” — especially considering the shoes cost nearly $200 a pair.
Plaintiffs also claim On refuses to issue refunds, leaving them with expensive sneakers they no longer feel comfortable wearing. The lawsuit states that customers have “no relief after buying almost $200 shoes they can no longer wear without doing significant DIY modifications to the shoe.”
Claims Against The Company
The complaint accuses On of being aware of the noise defect and continuing to market the shoes as premium athletic wear. It alleges that the company engaged in deceptive marketing techniques by promoting the sneakers as “quiet and supportive” despite customer complaints.
Those involved in the class action are seeking compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages, in addition to full refunds. As of now, On has not released a public statement addressing the lawsuit or whether it plans to issue refunds to affected customers. The Swiss-based company, known for its rapid growth in the sneaker market, has built a reputation for sleek design and cutting-edge technology — a reputation now being challenged by this noisy controversy.
