Could you imagine getting on your flight thinking it would be a pretty smooth ride, possibly a little humps and bumps down the way, but you have to divert due to something completely unexpected? Well, that’s what happened to passengers aboard a Spirit Airlines plane.
The flight, which was headed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was reportedly struck by gunfire while preparing to land, prompting an emergency diversion to an airport in the Dominican Republic. Originating from Fort Lauderdale, the flight managed to land safely.
According to reports by the Miami Herald, at least one individual aboard the aircraft—a flight attendant—was grazed by a bullet during the alarming episode. Despite the close call, the flight completed its emergency landing without further injuries or major incidents.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince was forced to ground all commercial flights, raising serious safety concerns in the region. Other planes including JetBlue Airways and Amerijet Cargo, had to alter their flight paths to avoid Haiti, according to tracking data.
As the news site notes, this is marks the second occurrence of gunfire targeting aircraft in the Port-au-Prince airspace in recent weeks. An incident accounted last month whew a United Nations helicopter was also struck by gunfire from local gangs. Luckily, there no reported injuries after making a safe return.
As investigations is currently ongoing into the source of the gunfire.
