We’ve heard the story before of Akon gifting French Montana a fake luxury watch…but the “Locked Up” artist is giving more details about his purchase that went terribly wrong.
While appearing on Drink Champs, Akon explained how he ended up copping a fake watch not only for French but for himself!
N.O.R.E kicked off the conversation by asking, “Are you ever going to give French a watch so he can stop telling this story?” he said in the teaser for their upcoming interview.
“Listen, me and French got got that day,” Akon explained. “I’m the one that lost money. I bought two new watches — one for me and one for [French].” He went on to say, “Here’s the thing: I didn’t know what a Hublot was. I just knew that I liked that. It was a nice watch. So, the dude was selling watches. And I said, ‘Yo, how much is that watch?’”
“Normally about $15,000 to $20,000. But I got a guy that can get it for us for $5,000,” he continued, before admitting he purchased it on Canal Street!!!! Now, if you’re from New York then you know it’s a popular street in the city where they sell a bunch of knockoff pieces like bags and jewelry. Akon goes on to try to clear his name and share how he learned his lesson from his big L.

Now, this is not the first time Akon has talked about this. In a 2022 interview with Real 92.3’s The Cruz Show, which premiered on YouTube on Friday (Oct. 21), Akon said he was completely unaware that he gifted French Montana a fake Hublot because—at the time—he wasn’t knowledgeable about luxurious watches.
As he looked back on the gifting moment, he said at the time, “He was happy, I was happy. We lit, we lit,” Akon recalled on The Cruz Show. “Now mind you, I’m not really knowing there’s specific brands [of] watches and all that, I wasn’t really a watch guy. I just saw something I liked that looked nice and I got it. French clearly went to his jeweler and got it checked out, and the jeweler was like, ‘Yo, this is fake.'”
“Not only was I upset because I paid, like, five grand for each watch,” he revealed. “In my mind that was expensive for a watch. But obviously, for a Hublot that was no money, that was a huge discount. So I’m like, ‘This ungrateful ass nigga.'”
As we previously reported, the Coke Boys artist also appeared on Drink Champs back in 2021 and shared how he found out his watch was just a big ol’ dupe.
Recalling the funny moment, French said, “He was like yo, close your eyes I got a gift for you. I closed my eyes too mane… That’s what hurt the most. Just like you made me close my eyes for this fake joint B… I’ll never forgive you!” At the time, French said he was still waiting on Akon to gift him a real one… and it doesn’t look like that has happened yet.
Either way, it looks like that little situation made their bond even stronger.
