The message was sent from a disgruntled manager who was fed up with restaurant staff who were consistently called out on a regular basis. She allegedly wrote, “Our call-offs are occuring at a staggering rate. From now on, if you call off, you might as well go out and look for another job. We are no longer tolerating ANY EXCUSE for calling off. If you’re sick, you need to come prove it to us. If your dog died, you need to bring him in and prove it to us.” She continued say that he never took a day off in 11 years and even reported to work after a car accident.

“Do you know in my 11.5 years at Darden how many days I called off? Zero. I came in sick. I got in a wreck literally on my way to work one time, airbags went off and my car was totaled, but you know what, I made it to work, ON TIME.”

The Olive Garden manager’s post goes viral and different viewpoints were shared about his message

After the post went viral, social media users expressed their own experiences in the workplace and how some managers are not sympathetic to their employees personal lives. One user wrote,”I’ve been a GM for years, still don’t understand how managers can’t grasp this. You fill in when your team is down. Someone on your team is sick, then grab an apron/register/whatever and get to work. Managers who are too good to do the work of their employees are not managers.” Another said they used to be a waitress at Olive Garden and noted how their manager wanted them to report to work despite being sick.

“I worked in restaurants for 6 years, 1 of those years was at Olive Garden. Based on my experience of management at Olive Garden, this does not surprise me in the least. There should not be a culture of “come to work sick” when the work is feeding people.”
