A recent incident at Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma has stirred up controversy and sparked an investigation by state authorities. A video from a fundraiser event at the school surfaced online, showing students engaging in a bizarre activity that involved sucking and licking each other’s toes.

The footage, which quickly went viral, depicted students participating in a fundraiser for a local coffee shop that supports individuals with special needs. As part of the event, students volunteered to take part in various competitions, one of which involved licking peanut butter off each other’s toes.

The disturbing video drew swift condemnation from Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters, who described the incident as “disgusting” and vowed to investigate the matter. Social media users expressed shock and disgust at the footage, with many calling for accountability and questioning the school’s decision to allow such activities.

Despite the backlash, Deer Creek High School celebrated the success of the fundraiser, which raised over $150,000 for the charitable cause. In a statement, school staff highlighted the positive impact of the event and thanked the students, patrons, and sponsors who contributed to its success.

“This afternoon, Deer Creek High School announced a grand total of $152,830.38 raised for Not Your Average Joe Coffee, an organization created to ‘inspire our community by including students and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities,” school staff wrote according to Fox News.

“On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Deer Creek High School hosted an assembly called the Clash of Classes for students who paid to attend. During this assembly, ninth through twelfth grade students volunteered to participate in various student-organized class competitions, in the spirit of raising money for NYAJ. All participants in the assembly were students who signed up for the game(s) they played ahead of time. No Deer Creek faculty or staff participated in any of the games during this Clash of Classes assembly. Many dedicated students gave generously of their personal time to achieve this momentous accomplishment, which will serve communities beyond the boundaries of Deer Creek. We would like to thank all of the patrons, businesses and sponsors who contributed to the success of this year’s Wonderful Week of Fundraising,” the statement continued.

While the school’s fundraising efforts were commendable, the controversial nature of the toe-sucking activity has raised concerns about appropriate supervision and oversight during school events. Lawmakers and advocacy groups have weighed in on the incident, with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, declaring “this is child abuse.”

As the investigation into the incident unfolds, the community awaits answers and assurances that such inappropriate activities will not be tolerated in the future.
