Billie Eilish is speaking out after reports stated she openly came out as gay. As we previously reported, in the Variety Power of Women cover story, the singer said she was “physically attracted” to women. While appearing at Variety’s Hitmakers Awards over the weekend, where she accepted the Film Song of the Year gong for the Barbie movie song What Was I Made For?, the singer was asked on the red carpet by the magazine about “coming out”.
The 21-year-old said: “I kind of thought, wasn’t it obvious? I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”
Reacting to the headlines, Eilish took to her Instagram to share this message: “Thanks Variety for my award and also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking to me about anything else that matters,” she wrote.
“I like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares.”
What Is Outing?
Outing refers to the act of publicly revealing someone’s private information or personal details without their consent. It is often done with the intention of exposing something about an individual that they may have chosen to keep hidden, such as their sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other personal aspect of their life.
Outing can have serious consequences for the person being exposed. It can lead to feelings of anxiety, shame, and vulnerability, as they may not be ready or willing to share that aspect of themselves with others. Outing can also result in social stigma, discrimination, and even harm, particularly in situations where the person’s identity is not widely accepted or understood.
One of the most common forms of outing is when someone reveals another person’s sexual orientation or gender identity without their permission. This can occur in various settings, such as at work, within families, or within social circles. Outing someone in this manner can have detrimental effects on their personal and professional relationships, as well as their overall well-being.
Although Elish feels this way, members of the LGBTQ community has been flooding her with love and support.
