A Facebook post made by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Capt. Jay Baker revealed he posted a T-shirt that targeted China and claimed it was the country’s fault for the pandemic. According to Buzzfeed News, the image shared on his page showed a shirt displaying the knock-off version of the Corona beer logo that reads, “Covid 19 IMPORTED VIRUS FROM CHY-NA” in April 2020.  Baker added a caption where he says he “loved the shirt” and urged his friends to buy one before it sells out.

During a press conference regarding the shooting that killed six Asian women and two others in three massage parlors, Baker said that “Yesterday was a really bad day for [Long} and this is what he did.” and it was still too early to determine whether the shooting was motivated by race. Additionally, he reported that Long could’ve suffered from issues stemming from “sexual addition” but it is still too early to tell.
