Officer Who Killed Ma’Khia Bryant Will Not Face Charges

The Columbus Police officer who shot and killed 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant in April 2021, will not be charged.

A grand jury declined to bring charges against Officer Nicholas Reardon, the Fraternal Order of Police said on Friday: “The jury decided to return a no bill which means they did not proceed with any criminal charges against officer Reardon and found no criminal act,” FOP President Jeff Simpson explained. “That is pleasing to hear. It’s always sad when there is a loss of life, however, the actions of the people at scene, caused him to take action that saved lives and he is trained very well. He did his job, and it is a good outcome.”

As it was previously reported, police were responding to a 911 call made from Bryant’s foster home about a group of girls threatening to stab members of the household. Bryant was shot four times by officer Nicholas Reardon after it was said she had a knife in her hand. She died later from her injuries.

The public safety department of the city of Columbus said in a statement that the next step in the case is “an administrative investigation to determine whether the officer’s actions were within Division policy. Because of that pending investigation, at this time we are not able to comment further.”
