All NYPD officers have been banned from participating in NYC Pride events until 2025. The event’s organizers said in a statement that given the current social climate, police officers are prohibited.

According to ABC News, Heritage of Pride co-chair Andre Thomas explained how the decision to ban NYPD officers from the event was difficult but it was to ensure the safety of trans people and people of color within the LBGTQ community. He says, “We know many LGBT cops. But what the institution represents sometimes to a person of color or trans person is violence, and that doesn’t make you feel safe. So that’s the perspective we’re coming from. And it’s a difficult place to be. But we know that’s what our community expects of us at this time.”

However, the decision was opposed by GOAL, Gay Officers Action League, stating that it was “shameful” and “dehumanizing” as described by GOAL President Brian Downey. Additionally, a spokesperson for the NYPD called the decision “disheartening” since it violates their values of tolerance and inclusion.

“Our annual work to ensure a safe, enjoyable Pride season has been increasingly embraced by its participants. The idea of officers being excluded is disheartening and runs counter to our shared values of inclusion and tolerance. That said, we’ll still be there to ensure traffic safety and good order during this huge, complex event.”

NYC Pride organizers said they will review their policies in 2025 based on community safety and social climate.
