A Texas woman was shot and killed by a stray bullet minutes after bringing in the new year with her family.
According to KTRK, Philippa Ashford,61, was struck and killed by celebratory gunfire minutes after midnight near her driveway in Harris County. The shooting occurred while Ashford was outside with her family and friends and lighting fireworks when she grabbed her chest and said: “I think I’ve been shot.”

Deputies reported Ashford fell and died instantly after she was struck by the bullet.
“At this point from our witnesses and seeing at the scene, we believe this may very well be a case of celebratory gunfire somewhere else in the neighborhood,”

Sgt. Ben Beall said none of Ashford’s relatives were using a firearm at the time of the shooting and investigators questioned neighbors along with searching for shell casings.
“I don’t know you can even figure what the odds are. You’ve got the family together, celebrating the new year and now the matriarch of the family is deceased.”
