Nurse Dawn Wooten, who worked at the Irwin County Detention Center in southern Georgia said that authorities performed questionable hysterectomies. In her complaint filed on Monday, Wooten explains that she called a gynecologist who works outside the facility, “the uterus collector.” She claimed that nearly every inmate who saw the doctor received a hysterectomy and claimed the doctor removed the “wrong ovary” on at least one patient.
Wooten notes that it was unclear if the patients — particularly immigrant women — all agreed to the procedure, which would prevent them from having children in the future. In addition to this, it was said that authorities also refused to test detainees for COVID-19 and shredded medical records. Wotten, says she actually saw a sick-call nurse destroy a box of detainee complaints without looking at them.
Ms. Wooten alleged gross misconduct at the center with respect to Covid-19 precautions and said she was demoted after protesting the conditions and staying home while symptomatic.
“I became a whistleblower, now I’m a target,” Ms. Wooten said at a press conference on Tuesday. But, “I’ll be a target anytime”, she said, rather than staying a part of what she called an “inhumane” system.
As BBC notes, the Advocacy group Project South has filed a complaint with the Homeland Security Department’s internal watchdog that relies heavily on the nurse’s words.
Meanwhile, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it will defer to the Homeland Security inspector general.
“That said, in general, anonymous, unproven allegations, made without any fact-checkable specifics, should be treated with the appropriate skepticism they deserve,” the agency said in a statement.
