NLE Choppa has addressed the backlash that came with a behind-the-scenes clip taken from his recent music video shoot with Sukihana and Sexxy Red two weeks ago.
As you’ll probably recall, during filming for the visual, the rapper was seen holding onto both women’s hair while they were on all fours — and people clearly weren’t amused by it. Fellow rapper Lil Mama was one of the celebrities who spoke out and said that the clip she watched was not only degrading but ultimately setting Black women back. She wrote, “I feel like women these days will know BETTER and still play a role in setting us bacc centuries.”
But Lil Mama wasn’t the only person who had taken issue with the music video scene as many people chimed in, saying Choppa should do better. And in an attempt to clear the air and give some more clarity to those who were outraged by what they saw, Choppa touched on the subject matter in his latest interview with “The Breakfast Club.”
When Charlamagne Tha God asked him why he would want to walk a woman like a dog, he responded, “Sexxy Red, she got down and she was actually doing something else […] She was performing to the camera, like, sitting up in the grass, and in the process, she got down, and she was like, ‘Grab my hair.'”
He said that when he proceeded to grab her hair, “it just kinda went from there.” He assured that he didn’t tell Sukihana and Sexxy Redd to get on all fours so that he could walk them like a dog; it was more so something that organically happened after the “Pound Town” rapper specifically asked to have him hold onto her hair. “I’ma be honest though, everything is like a learning experience,” he added. “I know how sensitive the world is… and I know the type of person I am; I do a lot of good.”
Sukihana actually went on to defend herself, Choppa and Redd amid the backlash, particularly after coming across Lil Mama’s comment.
In a shady response to the “Lip Gloss” rapper’s comment, Sukihana hit back by tweeting, “They said the girl ‘lil mama’ that sing that lip gloss song was in the comments speaking on me. If I was y’all I would tell her leave me tf alone.”
This prompted Lil Mama to fire back, saying it didn’t matter who had appeared in the music video; her comments weren’t to be taken personally because she would have felt the same way regardless of who was participating in the scene.
“Hey [Sukihana], I know we don’t know each other personally. I’m seeing you wrote a post addressing me and I never addressed you personally,” she said. “You could of been any Blacc woman in that video I posted a comment under. The way I feel still stands.”
“I feel like women these days will know BETTER and still play a role in setting us bacc centuries. The only reason I deleted my comment was because I didn’t want to offend you and anyone else partaking in this disturbing clip.
“I don’t know about You, but I don’t want our daughters to remember us like this. Or feel this what they ‘Need To Do To Survive’ and if that’s the excuse anybody come up with in 2023. That’s CAP.”
