R&B singer Nicci Gilbert continues to defend herself, and now R&B and Neo-Soul singer India Arie, after each of them condemned rapper Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” song.
As we previously shared, Gilbert initially called out the track’s lyrical content back on June 21. After witnessing Caresha getting a standing ovation at the 2026 BET Awards this past Sunday, Gilbert again spoke out about the song on July 1.
But, she wasn’t the only one. India Arie also condemned the track on June 30. She reacted to social users on Threads, who were calling for a boycott. While Arie denied joining in on the boycott call, she did slam Miami’s lyrics, just like Nicci Gilbert.
Her comments resulted in Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” producer, J White Did It defending their song. On July 1, he posted a video of himself in the studio, where he remixed India Arie’s “Video” with “Spend Dat.”
Hours later, on July 2, Arie took to her Instagram with a video to continue clarifying her stance on the matter. Then, Trick Daddy came to Yung Miami’s defense. On July 2, he went live on Instagram and went completely nuclear on the “old raggedy h*es” being “mad and jealous.”

Since then, Nicci Gilbert has again gone online to speak out about the song and defend herself and India Arie. She took to X and called out people “demonizing Black women” for simply “trying to uplift, inspire, and protect our community.”
In her first of many tweets, Gilbert said:
“What saddens me most about this #SpendDat conversation isn’t the people attacking the opinions of two Black women in music who have spent nearly 60 years collectively trying to uplift, inspire, and protect our community. It’s the people who know something is wrong, yet choose silence to protect their comfort, careers, or peace of mind. Ignorance has always been loud. What hurts more is the silence of those who know better. Much respect to India Arie for standing on her convictions. If the moment ever called for it, l’d stand 10 toes beside you without hesitation, Queen.”
In a second post, she wrote:
“People are killing our babies in cold blood and getting off with a slap on the wrist for THINKING they are shoplifting. Now we have songs that encourage the behavior being celebrated & the two women brave enough to speak publicly about it being demonized and disrespected by the same people we are trying to save. Sounds a lot like what C Delores Tucker endured trying to bring awareness to how Gangster Rap was negatively impacting our culture before we lost Tupac, Biggie and any other rapper dead or incarcerated. We all have listened to the music but when we know better we do better and maybe wisdom and experience is worth listening to.”
Finally, in one of her last posts, Gilbert wrote:
“Black women can’t even stand up for our families and communities anymore without being demonized and ostracized we are COOKED… I do [highlight songs from male rappers] but after this even those of us who did are probably gonna just let y’all have it because it’s been over 30 years of us trying and y’all just don’t care. It’s sad and terrible that women who deeply love our people can’t get support trying to save us.”
