Newborn Baby & Mother Test Positive For Coronavirus In London

Via its mother, a newborn baby in London has tested positive for the coronavirus, and is believed to be one of the world’s youngest patients with the novel disease.

Suspecting she’d come down with pneumonia, the mother was rushed to a North Middlesex hospital, days before giving birth and learning her diagnosis.

While it’s still unknown whether the infant contracted the disease in the womb or during birth, the two have since been separated; with the mother being transferred to a specialist infections hospital. They are both in quarantine for treatment and recovery.

Furthermore, North Middlesex university hospital NHS trust stated, “Two patients at North Middlesex university hospital have tested positive for coronavirus. One has been transferred to a specialist centre and one is being treated in an isolation room.”

They add, “The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority, so in following guidance from Public Health England, we are regularly deep cleaning the areas where the patients are cared for and staff who were in close contact with these patients were advised to self-isolate.”

Additionally, as Chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty previously stated that he doesn’t believe pregnant women should begin worrying about the novel virus, the Government website adds that currently there’s no clinical evidence to suggest it can be transmitted through breast milk.

It states, “Infection can be spread to the baby in the same way as to anyone in close contact with you.”
