New Zealand Reportedly Eradicates Coronavirus

New Zealand has reportedly eradicated the Coronavirus after local health officials claimed that the last person who had contracted the virus had recovered.

It has been 17 days since the last new case was reported in New Zealand. The country has closed its borders to everybody except for citizens, however they do want that another outbreak could be possible if people come in from other places.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield released a statement,

“Having no active cases for the first time since February 28 is certainly a significant mark in our journey but as we’ve previously said, ongoing vigilance against COVID-19 will continue to be essential,” Bloomfield said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke on the new developments.

“This freedom from restrictions relies though heavily on the ongoing role that our border controls will play in keeping the virus out … The virus will be in our world for some time to come,” Ardern said at a press conference Monday.

Only 1,500 people contracted the virus in New Zealand, and 22 passed away. The Prime Minister enforced a strict lockdown earlier on in the outbreak which severely helped flatten the curve.
