According to the Times Union, Kaylin A. Gillis, 20, was in a car with three other individuals looking for a friend’s residence when they drove up to a house on Patterson Hill Road. Kevin D. Monahan, 65, came out on the porch and fired two shots after they attempted to turn the car around. Investigators claimed no one from the group attempted to enter Monahan’s home before the shooting, and one of the shots struck Gillis as she was sitting in the car.

After the incident, her pals attempted to notify 911 in a neighboring town because Washington County had minimal mobile service. Despite the fact that medical personnel attempted CPR on Gillis, she died as a result of her injuries. Monahan was “uncooperative” with deputies, according to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, and it took police an hour to arrest him.

“Monahan was uncooperative with the investigation and refused to exit his residence to speak with police. He was later taken into custody with the assistance of the New York State Police Special Operation Response Team after several hours.”

Murphy said Monahan had no reason to fire a weapon toward Gillis and her friends.

“She was an innocent young girl who was out with friends looking for another friend’s house. There was no reason for Mr. Monahan to feel threatened,”

The shooting occurred days after 16-year-old Ralph Yarl went to the wrong home to pick up his siblings and was shot by homeowner Andrew Lester.

Gillis’ family created a GoFundMe to pay for funeral expenses.

“On behalf of the Gillis family, we would like to thank everyone who has offered their love and prayers as they embark on this incredibly difficult journey of grief and healing. The dollars raised through this fund will go directly to the Gillis family for use toward Kaylin’s funeral expenses and any immediate financial needs. Again, thank you for your support of this incredible family. Your kindness, prayers and love are felt by the Gillis family and everyone in the community that has suffered this tragic loss.”
