A viral clip of the incident off TV footage circulated on Twitter, showing spit from someone in the stands seemingly landing behind Young before the fourth quarter. While it wasn’t clear at the time if the spit actually landed on Young, he didn’t appear to react at the moment as he seemed very focused on the game.
However, the Knicks said they banned the fan infefinetdly for his nasty move. “We investigated the matter and determined that this patron, who is not a season ticket holder, did indeed spit on Trae Young, and for that reason, he is now banned from The Garden indefinitely,” the team said in a statement. “We apologize to Trae and the entire Atlanta Hawks organization for this fan’s behavior.”
The statement added: “This was completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our venue. We have turned the information over to the appropriate authorities.”
TMZ noted that Young will NOT be pressing charges over the incident. His agent told ESPN, “We appreciate the Garden’s response to the incident and Trae’s focus remains on his teammates and Game 3.”
