“NYC is first major American city to take combined steps of this magnitude and call out the danger of social media clearly and directly just as the surgeon general did with tobacco and guns.”

Additionally, New York City unveiled a comprehensive social media action plan aimed at holding these companies accountable, providing support to young people and families, and conducting research on the long-term effects of social media on youth.

In response to the lawsuit, social media platforms have defended their practices. A spokesperson from Snap highlighted the platform’s unique design focused on fostering communication among close friends, while Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, emphasized the array of tools and features available to support users and their parents.

“While we will always have more work to do, we feel good about the role Snapchat plays in helping close friends feel connected, happy and prepared as they face the many challenges of adolescence,” the spokesperson for Snap Chat said.
