The Democratic assemblywoman is being accused of falsely insisting that she was a graduate of the HBCU when it’s being reported that she never actually completed a degree at HU, or anywhere else for the matter.
According to the New York Post, Dickens is actively looking to step away from her longtime position as an Assemblywoman, and is hoping to takeover the Harlem City Council seat of police-defender Kristin Richardson Jordan in the current city council primary race.
Meanwhile, according to her official Assembly website, it is reported that Dickens “completed her studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C.” It is also noted in a 2005 voter guide from the city Campaign Finance Board (CFB), that she possesses a “degree” from Howard University.
That same year, under the education section of a Citizens Union questionnaire, Dickens also listed “Howard University (BA).” In another CU questionnaire for the year 2009, she continued to boast about another school, claiming that she performed graduate level work at the elite University of Chicago. According to The Post, the school registrar responded to an inquiry and told the publication that Dickens never graduated from or has ever been enrolled at the University of Chicago.
As for this year, Dickens did not list any information about her education in her voter guide entry for the Campaign Finance Board. Additionally, Dickens’ campaign claimed that her Chicago work consisted of her receiving a “federal Housing and Urban Development management certificate.”
They also confirmed that she never received a degree from Howard University. The team simply explained the educational discrepancies as “simple errors” being made about the Assemblywoman’s past. A representative for Dickens said, “Inez has attended various institutions to receive relevant certificates so that she can further her education.”
