New Report Reveals Florida Undercounted COVID-19 Deaths By The Thousands
A new report published by the American Journal of Public Health reveals Florida and Gov. Ron DeSantis undercounted their COVID-19 deaths by the thousands.
Earlier this month, the report, entitled Analysis of Excess Deaths During the COVID-19 Pandemic in the State of Florida, suggested that Florida experienced 4,924 excess deaths that should’ve been counted as resulting from COVID-19, but were not. In turn, this would’ve lowered the state’s COVID fatality rate, being as some COVID-19 patients, may have had diabetes or asthma at their time of death.

Researchers wrote, “Total deaths are significantly higher than historical trends in Florida even when accounting for COVID-19–related deaths. The impact of COVID-19 on mortality is significantly greater than the official COVID-19 data suggest.” Meanwhile, it’s reported that over 30,000 Florida residents reportedly passed away from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic last year.
Meanwhile, Moosa Tatar, a public health economist at the University of Utah who led the research on Florida’s exess deaths, says, “I am sure that COVID-19 is responsible for most of these excess deaths.”
