New Mom Doesn’t Recognize Newborn After Coronavirus Battle

New mom Sylvia LeRoy survived her battle with COVID-19 after the Brooklyn nurse tested positive while pregnant in March.

Despite her miraculous survivals, she can hardly talk and has no memory of being pregnant with her daughter, Esther, after suffering a brain injury during her battle.

“We tell her, ‘Sylvia, you were ill, you had your baby, but you did really good — do you remember?’ And she shakes her head,” LeRoy’s sister, Shirley Licin told the NY Post.

“It was a very dark, dark time and we still don’t know all of her outcomes,” Licin added. “But her trajectory is so different now. What we’re seeing today is so vastly wonderful.”

On March 27, LeRoy was admitted to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brownsville. She worked there as a labor and delivery nurse, and is most likely where she caught COVID-19. After giving birth she went into cardiac arrest and lost Oxygen to her brain, causing her to go into a vegetative state.

Weeks after her ordeal, LeRoy was taken home and is on her road to recovery.

“She’s gonna need several more months of that, just to hold herself up in a wheelchair.  alone medical supplies, from adult diapers to equipment that can lift her out of bed. But it’s further than she could have gotten without the tens of thousands of supporters who helped her recover,” added Licin.

“There’s still hope for Sylvia — every day we see changes,” she said. “She just needs a fighting chance.”
