New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Officially Legalizes Weed In The Garden State

As New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy fulfills his three-year-old promise and officially legalizes weed in the garden state, residents can now freely blaze up to six ounces of recreational spliffs and blunts.

On Monday (Feb. 22), Gov. Murphy signed three bills legalizing the recreational use of up to six ounces in the state and decriminalizing possession. The move follows three years of failed legislative attempts, tax negotiations and protracted legal battles.

Ahead of signing, Murphy said, “As of this moment, New Jersey’s broken and indefensible marijuana laws, which permanently stained the records of many residents and short-circuited their futures, and which disproportionately hurt communities of color and failed the meaning of justice at every level, social or otherwise — are no more. This process may have had its fits and starts, but it is ending in the right place. And, I firmly believe, this process has ended in laws that will serve as a national model.”

However, it’s reported that the state will still need to license new dispensaries to meet the need for over 100,000 medical marijuana patients that’ve already been cleared to legally blaze up. So, recreational sales could start at the end of 2021, if not sooner.
