The streaming platform and channels are banning the corset and allowing actors to wear their underwear after several complaints about the garment, as reported by Metro UK. ‘The corset is famously restrictive, and many actresses have complained to wardrobe departments about damage, both short-term and long, being done after a long 12 to 14-hour day wearing them on set. Essentially, there were health and safety concerns about keeping women in a pinching corset for weeks at a time,’ a source said.

The source also said streaming platforms and channels want to be seen as progressive as they don’t want to encourage women to have smaller waists. Bridgerton producers reportedly told cast members and crew that corsets are no longer required on set, but Netflix has yet to confirm the source’s statement.

In respose to the reported ban, several Twitter users chimed in and the corsets were most likely not fitted properly and historically in accurate as corsets are supposed to be moulded to the body. “Netflix “banning” corsets from their period dramas because of health risks, just proves they weren’t fitted correctly. A correctly fitted corset is comfortable and more supportive than modern bras. Also, why were they tight lacing corsets in Bridgerton? It’s not necessary,” user @megshenley wrote.

‘This is a costuming department issue. If a corset hurts or is in any way uncomfortable, then it is either cheap or poorly fitted. Much of the controversy around corsets is based on wives tales’

‘Bridgerton’ actress Simone Ashley who had a starring role in the second season revealed during an interview with The Sunday Times that she felt a lot of discomfort and vomited while wearing corsets on set. ‘ They’re so beautiful, but I hate them — never again! Luckily, we’re allowed to wear bras now instead and that has changed everything for me. I can do a 12-hour day and feel comfortable,” she added.

She also told Glamour UK about her experience in a 2022 interview: “I had a lot of pain with the corset. I think I tore my shoulder at one point! I realised when you wear the corset, you just don’t eat,” she went on. “It changes your body. I had a smaller waist very momentarily. Then the minute you stop wearing it, you’re just back to how your body is.
