Netflix & Abraham Quintanilla, Father Of Selena, Sued By Producer Over Series
Netflix and Abraham Quintanilla, the father of Latin music legend Selena, are being sued by a producer over a new series based on the late singer’s life.
The producer has been identified as Moctesuma Esparza, who produced the highly revered 1997 film starring Jennifer Lopez. Esparza is accusing Quintanilla, 81, of violating a contract agreement signed in 1995. The agreement stated that Quintanilla allegedly gave Esparza the rights to the life stories of Selena; which includes a motion picture and any other remakes.

Additionally, Esparza says due to the 1997’s film success, he and Quintanilla discussed in 1998 of producing a TV series, mini-series and/or second film. In addition to the streaming platform and Selena’s dad, Esparza has also listed Selena’s sister Suzette in his suit, claiming they met along with her father to discuss a storyline he developed about a “Young Selena,” which never came to fruition. Since learning in 2018 of Quintanilla licensing the Selena rights to Netflix, he became upset and is demanding answers via his suit for at least $1 million in damages. Currently, Netflix is slated to stream ‘Selena: The Series‘ in December 2020.
