NBA Recognizes Terrence Clarke With Honorary Draft Pick After Fatal Car Accident
During the 2021 NBA draft, the league took a moment to select the late University of Kentucky star Terrence Clarke as an honorary pick. The athlete had entered the draft before his death in an April car crash at age 19.
As we previously reported, Clarke died in a car accident on April 22 in Los Angeles, where he was preparing for the draft. Clarke’s mother, sister, and brother were present for the event in New York as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Clarke as an honorary pick between the 14th and 15th selections in the draft.
“His extraordinary talent, commitment, and dedication to the game deserve to be recognized on this stage,” Silver said.
Clarke’s mother was deeply emotional as she reached the stage. She can be seen hugging Silver as the entire room gave a standing ovation and chanted Terrence’s name.
As the Associated Press notes, Clarke played just eight games for Kentucky due to a leg injury but had been expected to get drafted. He made six starts for Kentucky and averaged 9.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2 assists.
