“These toads have prominent parotoid glands that secrete a potent toxin. It can make you sick if you handle the frog or get the poison in your mouth. As we say with most things you come across in a national park, whether it be a banana slug, an unfamiliar mushroom, or a large toad with glowing eyes in the dead of night, please refrain from licking.”

Symptoms from the toad-licking include numbness of the mouth and throat in addition to life-threatening effects on the heart due to the toxins. According to MSN, people have discovered that the toad’s secretion contains a powerful hallucinogenic known as 5-MeO-DMT. However, the U.S. Drug and Enforcement Administration says the hallucinogenic is a Schedule 1 drug and is not acceptable for medical use.
“The risks to the public health associated with the abuse of 5-MeO- DMT are similar to the risks associated with those of schedule I hallucinogens. There have been reports of emergency room admissions and a death associated with the abuse of 5-MeO-DMT. 5-MeO-DMT has never been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for marketing as a human drug product in the United States and there are no recognized therapeutic uses of 5-MeO-DMT in the United States.”
Mike Tyson reportedly experimented with the toad toxin and said he felt like he “died” while hallucinating.
“In my trips I’ve seen that death is beautiful. Life and death both have to be beautiful, but death has a bad rep. The toad has taught me that I’m not going to be here forever. There’s an expiration date.”
