Minutes after the guilty verdict was issued to Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “thanked” Floyd for his sacrifice.

In reaction to the verdict, Nancy Pelosi said during a press conference with the Congressional Black Caucus that George Floyd sacrificed his life in the name of justice and thanked him. She says, “Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice, for being there to call out for your mom. How, how heartbreaking was that? Call out for your mom, I can’t breathe. But because of you, and because of thousands and millions of people around the world, your name will be synonymous with justice.” Pelosi’s words did not hold over well with Twitter users and some noted that it was tone-deaf how the House Speak assumed Floyd sacrificed his life for justice.

Twitter user @JerzeeGirlAj said, “What??? WHAT???? He was murdered not a willing participant! Why do Black people always have to sacrifice our lives so this country can act like it has a conscience? This is a horrible take. HORRIBLE.” Another user said, “No. This is not it. Black people are not sacrificial lambs. He was killed because of injustice, not as a symbol of anything. He was a human. A man. A father. A brother. Let’s not do this.”
