In reaction to the verdict, Nancy Pelosi said during a press conference with the Congressional Black Caucus that George Floyd sacrificed his life in the name of justice and thanked him. She says, “Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice, for being there to call out for your mom. How, how heartbreaking was that? Call out for your mom, I can’t breathe. But because of you, and because of thousands and millions of people around the world, your name will be synonymous with justice.” Pelosi’s words did not hold over well with Twitter users and some noted that it was tone-deaf how the House Speak assumed Floyd sacrificed his life for justice.
Twitter user @JerzeeGirlAj said, “What??? WHAT???? He was murdered not a willing participant! Why do Black people always have to sacrifice our lives so this country can act like it has a conscience? This is a horrible take. HORRIBLE.” Another user said, “No. This is not it. Black people are not sacrificial lambs. He was killed because of injustice, not as a symbol of anything. He was a human. A man. A father. A brother. Let’s not do this.”

This verdict isn’t justice, it’s a small piece of accountability
Justice won’t happen until police stop killing us, you know more people that you will claim made a sacrifice…. https://t.co/M3rwbCMYr3

Let’s NOT romanticize the murder of a man who would wanted to live by referencing the inhumane way he was killed as a sacrifice made to right the wrong in this country… https://t.co/LqsY9uw23c

No. This is not it. George Floyd was not a sacrificial lamb that made way for a better world. He was a victim of white supremacist violence that robbed him of his god-given dignity and stole his life. That was not a sacrifice. That was murder. https://t.co/UfKcT0g6bV

This is literally a celebration of Black death in the service of liberal fantasy. George Floyd did not sacrifice his life–he was murdered. She might as well have thanked the cop for murdering him since that’s why people took to the streets.
Antiblack, carceral relief. https://t.co/mw0ck1h4h4

I can guarantee you that no one watched that video of Floyd’s arrest and thought it was a sacrifice. https://t.co/WNmfat2Nfq
