Muni Long Says She Wrote Rihanna’s “California King Bed” In 10 Minutes While Looking For Furniture Online

Muni Long recently opened up about where she got the inspiration from to write Rihanna’s hit song, “California King Bed.” In an exclusive interview with Complex on Monday, the ‘Made For Me’ singer said that she was looking furniture online when she came up with the idea. 

During the time, Long says she was living Miami working out of We The Best studio. “They had the chords and everything. I listened, I went back into the room, and they gave me the file,” she told the news outlet. Long continued: “At the time I was planning to move to L.A. I was actually online looking for furniture when Maine comes in the room, and he’s like, ‘What you got?’ I didn’t have anything, because I had been messing around, and I looked at my computer.” While looking at furniture that’s when it clicked in her head to come up with the title.

“I said ‘California King Bed,’ and he said, ‘OK,’ and then he left. So I was like, ‘Oh, now I gotta write that,’ Long recalled. She added: “I wrote the song in like 10 minutes. I was like, ‘Turn it up, let me get this done real quick,’ so I could go back to looking for my furniture.” During the conversation she also shared that the song was originally written for Kelly Clarkson but her publisher decided to go a different direction and give it to Rihanna. “I was super excited,” she recalled. “She was on tour at the time, but she cut the song, and the rest is history. You wouldn’t think that she would do something like that.”

Long continued to speak on how the success of the song was great for her career. “After that, I did work with her in the studio many times, but that was my first entry point into my journey with Rih,” she said.

“California King Bed,” which was released in 2010 as part of her fifth studio album, Loud. The song quickly became a fan favorite and climbed the music charts, ultimately achieving great success.
