In the clips, Muni Long clearly pokes fun at the viral reaction Mariah Carey had to her covering her songs at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Back in March, Long joined Tori Kelly to tribute MC as she was awarded the “Icon Award.” Carey’s infamous seemingly displeased reaction went viral.

While responding to the criticism and speculation of disappointing Mariah Carey, Muni Long told the critics at the time:

“Y’all don’t understand ‘Queen’ things. I don’t wanna say ‘y’all,’ but, the people that’s got a lot to say, you don’t understand how this goes… paying homage and having respect for people. You know what I’m saying? She asked me to do it. You thought I chose to get on TV and sing a Mariah Carey song? You thought that was my choice? Why would I do that? Nobody can sing Mariah’s songs like Mariah. Nobody. I didn’t choose that. She asked me to do it. And of course I said, ‘Yes.’ ‘Cause why would I ever say, ‘No?’

I did my best and that’s all I can do. But even if she hated it. Which she didn’t—‘cause I do have the footage of us talking afterward. But, I’m not gonna post it, because her lighting wasn’t right and I’m not gonna do that to my girl. You know how Miss Carey is about her lighting. Okay? But, she told me I did a great job and she appreciated it. And that’s it. Once again, if she pushed me down the stairs and she told me she hated it, I would say, ‘Thank you.’ That’s what I would say. Thank you guys that love me and uplift me. Everybody else, [Muni put up the middle finger].”

Finally, in September, Carey broke her silence and revealed the truth behind her viral reaction to Muni Long’s tribute performance. While speaking with GQ, she said:

“I didn’t even hear the cover. I didn’t know it happened. No one told me. I just didn’t know that she had done ‘We Belong Together’ [as a cover] ‘cause her song was so similar to ‘We Belong Together.’ I had no idea that she did ‘We Belong Together.’ I’m very honored and flattered that she did it. I love Muni Long, she’s a great person, umm, but I just don’t like people doing my songs.”
