Get ready for a blend of action, romance, and everything in between in the upcoming Prime Video series “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” featuring Donald Glover as John Smith and Maya Erskine as Jane Smith. The eight-episode show kicks off its streaming journey on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024, revolving around the spy comedy theme where the characters, initially strangers, embark on a marriage under new identities to work for a mysterious agency.

Each episode unveils a fresh mission and a new chapter in their relationship, posing the intriguing question: “What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?” In an exclusive interview, show-runner Francesca Sloane shares insights on what viewers can anticipate, potential Easter eggs from the original film, and hints about a possible second season, and the method behind why she and her friend Donald glover decided to take on the series, and what she has to say for those who doubted the show.

This time around, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine headline the latest series, portraying two spies based in Manhattan, who must “tackle a high-stakes mission weekly while also encountering a new relationship milestone” – in this case, their arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith.

Sloane shared that when Donald initially approached her about the show, given their friendship and past collaboration on Atlanta, she did not think he was serious at first about the project, but they soon recognized the potential to authentically explore the dynamics of a real relationship an marriage an the experience they go through, from sleep, eating etc. They balanced the need for a grounded narrative with the aspirational and whimsical elements of escapism, while trying to take a more realistic and relatable approach to the series.

We also touched on whether we can see another season, as the show is sure to become a fan favorite, and Fran share that despite people w wondering why they turned the poplar film into a series, she said she liked the challenge and wanted to take it on to see how they could put this down spin on it and make it more human and relatable to audiences. After all we never see the stars in action flicks do regular things, like eat, use the bathroom, run errands. That is what we love about the show, and will make it successful in the long run.
