No way! While many people believe Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell should take a beat and refrain, or even retire, from working, he’s been medically cleared to continue his schedule despite freezing for a second time in public. A Capitol physician says he’s just recovering from a concussion.

As we shared yesterday (Wednesday, August 30), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was seen on viral video freezing again during a press conference with reporters in Covington, Kentucky. The video shows 81-year-old McConnell standing at a podium as he is being asked by reporters about any plans he may have on running for re-election.
Appearing frozen for a good 10 seconds, a female associate standing near him notices his statue-like posture, runs up to him and proposes the question to him again, while also trying to encourage him to snap out of his frozen state. The woman asks the reporters for a minute, while calling over another associate to try to help out the Senator. Ultimately, he breaks out of it and begins talking again.

Now this wasn’t the first time that McConnell, who has served for 16 years as the GOP leader, had frozen in public. Back in July, during a news conference on Capitol Hill, the Senator had gone silent for about 20 seconds, and then was quickly escorted away from the cameras.
After freezing for a second time in public, McConnell has since been evaluated by a Capitol physician who has concluded his testing and medically cleared the Senator to continue work. Dr. Brian Monahan said, “I have consulted with Leader McConnell and conferred with his neurology team. After evaluating yesterday’s incident, I have informed Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule as planned.”

It’s reported that back in March, McConnell had fallen and hit his head, resulting in a concussion, and thus leading to his two recent public frozen moments. Also, McConnell’s office has previously noted that whenever he freezes it’s usually due to him being lightheaded or dehydrated; and Dr. Monahan confirmed, “Occasional lightheadedness is not uncommon in concussion recovery and can also be expected as a result of dehydration.”
Speaking out on Thursday (August 31), President Joe Biden said he spoke with McConnell earlier in the day and all is well. He said, “You know, he was his old self on the telephone, and having a little understanding of dealing with neurosurgeons and people. One of the leading women on my staff’s husband is a neurosurgeon as well. It’s not at all unusual to have a response … when you got a severe concussion, it’s part of recovery. And so I’m confident he’s going to be back to his old self.”
