Congratulations to Missy Elliott, who has been announced to receive her very own street named after her in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia.
According to reports, the Portsmouth City Council unanimously approved the name change from McLean Street to Missy Elliott Boulevard, honoring and recognizing the “Lose Control” rapper in their entertainment district, which also serves the Tidewater Community College, Victory Crossing Shopping Center, and Portsmouth Rivers Casino.

“I am forever GRATEFUL [prayer emoji] P-TOWN [raised hands emoji] VA #757 LOVE,” Elliott tweeted on Wednesday following the announcement. Back in November, the 51-year-old received her long-overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, with the likes of Ciara, Lizzo, and Mona Scott-Young showing up to pay tribute to one of the most influential women in Hip-Hop.
Elsewhere, it was just in May when the “Work It” star received some endearing words from fellow rapper Lil Wayne, who called her his number one best rapper during an appearance on the What’s Wright? With Nicki Wright podcast.
“For me, it’s always going to be first, Missy Elliott,” Weezy expressed. She’s a huge influence on everything I’ve ever done.” And, of course, Elliott was going to share a few words in response to hearing the endearing things Wayne had said about her.
“Whenever @LilTunechi says my name in his interviews, twitter don’t have enough space for me to say my GRATEFULNESS because he is a LEGEND himself who birthed many emcees after him & as a man to acknowledge me as a big influence 4 him I send you love WAYNE,” she wrote.
At her Walk of Fame ceremony last year, the event’s producer Ana Martinez described Elliott as one of the first women to steer her way through a male-driven industry and inspired the world with her creativity both as a singer-songwriter and producer herself.

“She continues to break barriers year after year and we’re thrilled to be able to honour her on the Walk of Fame.”
