The Mississippi Department of Corrections reported Saturday that two inmates are currently missing from the Mississippi State Penitentiary after a week of gang violence in multiple prisons.

According to USA Today, inmates David May,42, and Dillion Williams,27, were reported missing a week after multiple prisons experienced a violent “gang war” that killed five inmates. The two men were reported missing after an emergency count was performed by officials but an explanation was not given for what caused them to conduct the count.

Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement that state officers are currently searching for May and Williams. May is currently serving a life sentence for aggravated assault in Harrison County and Williams is serving 40 years for aggravated assault and burglary in Marshall County.

“I have directed the use of all necessary assets and personnel to achieve this result. Over 500 inmates have been moved to a more secure detention and a general lockdown continues.”
