Minnesota Teacher Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting Teen Dodges Jail After Blaming It On ‘Personal Trauma’

Madeleine Schmaltz, a 30-year-old former Minnesota teacher sentenced for sexually assaulting a teen student, has now evaded jail time after blaming her actions on “personal trauma.”

In September, the former Hermantown, MN middle school teacher, who resides in Saginaw, pleaded guilty to a count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct after having sex with a 16-year-old student in the spring of 2019. Instead of a usual jail sentence, on Monday (Nov. 9), Schmaltz was sentenced to probation after telling the court that “personal trauma” impacted her judgement.

Per a report, Schmaltz wholly stated, “During the spring of 2019, I was going through personal traumatic experiences that did cloud my judgment. Since then, I’ve been working through those experiences, along with just trying to better myself, and I will continue to do so.” In addition to her three years of probation, Schmaltz will be required to register as a predatory offender and will need to refrain from contacting her victim or any other minors to avoid time in prison.

It’s reported that Schmaltz’s illicit relationship with the student was discovered after the teen’s mother overheard a phone call between the two in June 2019. The conversation was “sexual in nature,” and the relationship was later confirmed by the student; who admitted he’d been going to Schmaltz’s house for homework and mentoring, which during time they were having sex.
