A Shakopee man was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly decapitated his girlfriend while she was sitting in his vehicle.

Alexis Saborit,42, appeared in court Friday after a criminal complaint was filed by prosecutors when he was accused of the murder of his girlfriend, 55-year-old America Thayer. The incident took place on Wednesday when a witness said they were hanging out with the couple earlier that day and said things were fine when Thayer tried to convince Saborit to make a court appearance so he couldn’t face any future issues. He added that Saborit would frequently carry a machete.

While speaking with police, Saborit explained that he and Thayer were dating for several years and claimed they were going to court so she could officially end their relationship. Additionally, he added that he killed Thayer by using a knife in self-defense and said she was trying to extort then murder him. He has a previous domestic violence case from 2017.

According to KARE 11, Saborit asked if he could be deported instead of going to trial but the request was immediately declined by a judge. If convicted for the crime, Saborit will face a sentence of 40 years in prison.
