While tours are usually how artists recoup their money from all of the costs stemming from recording, marketing, etc., Miley Cyrus reveals that despite grossing $63 million from her controversial and “outlandish” 2014 ‘Bangerz‘ tour, she “didn’t make a dime” for herself.

In 2013, Miley Cyrus famously ditched her squeaky clean Disney child star image when she dropped her critically-acclaimed ‘Bangerz‘ album. This also happened to be the same year that she went viral for swinging nude on a wrecking ball and also performing at the MTV Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke, where she roamed around the stage in a nude latex bikini, held a big foam finger, and twerked on the sultry R&B singer. A year later, she took her controversial talents on the road for her ‘Bangerz‘ tour.

With her new ‘Used To Be Young‘ series on TikTok, which dropped last month with her latest song “Used to Be Young” (marking the 10-year anniversary of her VMAs performance), Cyrus reflects on her past in the music and entertainment industry. In one of her most recent episodes, Cyrus looked back on her 2014 ‘Bangerz‘ tour and admitted how for the sake of her fans, she finished out the tour without taking a dime home.

In the TikTok clip, Cyrus said, “The ‘Bangerz’ Tour was an investment in myself. A lot of the ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces. I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face, on my tongue.”

She added, “The show was so big and I wanted to end it with a ‘Truman Show’ reference. So I flew out on a giant hotdog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign, the way that Jim Carrey does, because I felt like ‘The Truman Show’ was really a reflection of my life.”

Cyrus continued to admit, “I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent. And when everyone kept saying: ‘Why are you doing this? You’re going to do, like, 100 shows and you’re not going to make any money?,’ I said: ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself.’ So, I paid for it all, to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.”

According to BuzzFeed News, Cyrus’ outlandish 2014 ‘Bangerz‘ tour reportedly grossed $62.9 million that year and became the 16th highest-earning tour for the year.
