In January 2025, after securing a second term in the White House, Trump began telling press that he would seek a third term. That same month, Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed to amend the United States Constitution to give President Trump a third presidential term. On January 23, 2025, Ogles drafted a constitutional amendment to allow Trump to be the first president to secure a third term.

Currently, under the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, it is prohibited for a president to seek out a third term in the White House. Ogles’ proposal required the amending of the 22nd Amendment, a move that would be incredibly difficult. It would require either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of the states agreeing to call a constitutional convention to propose the changes.

In a statement, Ogles said:

“This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”

President Donald Trump Reveals One ‘Method’ To Seeking Third Term

In March 2025, Trump claimed he was “not joking” about running for a third presidential term. He even claimed there were “methods,” despite legal restrictions listed in the United States Constitution.

During a phone call with “allies” NBC News, Trump said, “A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go. You know, it’s very early in the administration. I’m focused on the current.”

When asked to clarify his comments, he said, “I’m not joking. But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.” NBC hosts also asked Trump if anyone presented plans to allow him to secure a third term. He said, “There are methods which you could do it.”

When asked if one of the methods included Vice President JD Vance running for office and then passing the position to Trump, he replied, “That’s one [method], but there are others too.” However, when asked if he could share another one, Trump simply replied, “No.”

In April 2025, Trump began selling red “Trump 2028” hats on his official merchandise website. But by May 2025, he backtracked on seeking a third term. He suggested VP JD Vance or United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio could succeed him. However, by October 2025, Trump again refused to rule out a third term while boasting about his “perfect” health.

Michelle Obama Insists She Would ‘Actively Work Against’ Barack Obama Running For President Again If Donald Trump Amended Constitution To Allow Third Term

During the January 21, 2026 episode of Alex Cooper‘s ‘Call Her Daddy‘ podcast, Michelle Obama admitted she would “actively work against” Barack Obama running for a third term if Donald Trump amended the Constitution. When asked if she thought her husband would consider running again, she said:

“I hope not. I would actively work against that. I would be at home working against it. You know, and maybe a lot of people be like, ‘Good. We don’t want them anyway.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s what I—right!’

You know, I do believe in the need for new vision. Right? I mean, the two terms is not just about, ‘We like him and we want it…’ We’re changing and growing so fast, this is a hard job. And it requires new energy, new vision all the time, new ways of looking at the world. Right? So, I do believe that eight years is enough.

And there’s so many talented people out there. Like, why would we keep going with the same people? You know? I would be a proponent for…And how are we going to build young leaders if the same people keep doing it again, and again, and again? You know, ‘Now it’s your turn. Now it’s my turn. Now you did it again. I’ll do it again.’

It’s like and there’s all these young, smart people who are just looking outside with their ideas as leaders get older and older. You know, the older you get, you just live a different life as an older established person. And I think there’s room for that wisdom, but there’s room for new ideas to come in. You know?

So, I am I think two terms is enough…for everybody. And it’s not a question of what order. It’s just like we’ve heard and experienced your ideas. This country is constantly evolving. What are the next thoughts? People with a new set of experiences, a new take on the world. This new generation is coming up. They travel more. They know more about the world. They’re exposed in a different way. Like, I am really, really curious about their perspectives on how to fix some of this stuff. Like, we don’t have all the answers, and that’s okay. That’s why we move on.”
