Michael Cohen To Be Released Back To Home Confinement After Retaliatory Arrest
After suing federal officials for his recent retaliatory arrest, President Donald Trump‘s former personal attorney Michael Cohen is to be released from prison and sent back to home confinement to finish out the remainder of his three-year sentence for crimes including campaign finance violations related to hush-money payments made on Trump’s behalf
New York Judge Alvin Hellerstein made a decision on Thursday, finding that “the government acted in a retaliatory manner when they arrested Cohen earlier this month. Hellerstein stated, “The purpose of transferring Mr. Cohen from furlough and home confinement to jail is retaliatory and its retaliatory because of his desire to exercise his first amendment rights to publish a book and discuss anything about the book or anything else he wants on social media and others.”

Cohen will now be released by 2 p.m. ET Friday after being held in solitary confinement at Otisville federal prison since July 9. While his attorney called the judge’s order a “victory for the First Amendment,” Danya Perry, who argued on Cohen’s behalf said, “[The ruling confirms] that the government cannot block Mr. Cohen from publishing a book critical of the president as a condition of his release to home confinement. This principle transcends politics and we are gratified that the rule of law prevails.”
