Mexico’s Supreme Court Votes To Decriminalize Abortion

In a landmark ruling, Supreme Court declared that it is simply unconstitutional to penalize abortion, with magistrates voting unanimously to decriminalize the procedure in the country.

“Today is a historic day for the rights of all Mexican women,” said Supreme Court Chief Justice Arturo Zaldivar on Tuesday. He added, “It is a watershed in the history of the rights of all women, especially the most vulnerable.”

The decision was being celebrated as a major victory for the women’s rights movement across Latin America. Mexico is now the fifth Latin American country to make this move, the Washington Post reports.

To note, the court’s decision won’t make abortion widely accessible immediately. However. It will also instantly free women who are currently in jail for getting an abortion, the news site notes.
