Meghan Markle Reveals She Suffered a Miscarriage In July
In an opinion article titled “The Losses We Share” published in The New York Times, Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry, revealed that she suffered a miscarriage in July.
Markle explained that it was a normal morning for her; feeding her dogs, taking her vitamins, and changing son Archie’s diaper, before a sharp cramp came on. “I dropped to the floor,” Markle, 39, wrote. Adding, she had a “sense that something was not right. ”I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.” She went on to share: “Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal,” CNN quotes.

“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” she added. The duchess and former actress said she was sharing her story to help break the silence around an all-too-common tragedy. About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, according to data from the Mayo Clinic, a U.S. nonprofit academic medical center.
“Some have bravely shared their stories; they have opened the door, knowing that when one person speaks truth, it gives license for all of us to do the same.” Markle goes on to describe how she tried to keep a “brave face” in the public eye and even recalled a moment last year as she was finished up a long tour in South Africa with Harry when a journalist asked her “Are you OK?” She deemed the question of “Are you OK?” to be important, especially in 2020:

“This year has brought so many of us to our breaking points. Loss and pain have plagued every one of us in 2020, in moments both fraught and debilitating,” she wrote, before adding, “So this Thanksgiving, as we plan for a holiday unlike any before — many of us separated from our loved ones, alone, sick, scared, divided and perhaps struggling to find something, anything, to be grateful for — let us commit to asking others, ‘Are you OK?'” Markle wrote.
