‘Matilda’ Star Mara Wilson Claims Britney Spears Was ‘Destroyed’ By A ‘Hyper-Sexualized’ Hollywood
‘Matilda‘ star Mara Wilson is publicly commiserating with fellow child star Britney Spears, further claiming that a “hyper-sexualized” Hollywood industry is to blame for “destroying” the popstar.
Amid the controversy and feedback following Spears’ current legal and emotional woes brought to light via a new documentary, entitled ‘Framing Britney Spears,’ Wilson has published an open letter explaining how she herself largely avoided the limelight due to being “sexualized” by the industry. The now 33-year-old actress says, “Our culture builds these girls up just to destroy them. Many moments of Ms. Spears’ life were familiar to me. We both had dolls made of us, had close friends and boyfriends sharing our secrets and had grown men commenting on our bodies.”

Wilson says although she “never appeared in anything more revealing than a knee-length sundress,” she’d been “photoshopped into child pornography” before the age of 12. On being violated so young, Wilson says, “Every time, I felt ashamed. This was all intentional: My parents thought I would be safer that way. But it didn’t work. People had been asking me, ‘Do you have a boyfriend?’ in interviews since I was 6. Reporters asked me who I thought the sexiest actor was and about Hugh Grant’s arrest for soliciting a prostitute. It was cute when 10-year-olds sent me letters saying they were in love with me. It was not when 50-year-old men did. “
