It was announced at San Diego’s International ComicCon in July 2019 that Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali would be playing the prolific daywalker in the new reboot. However, the studio wants to bring more diversity behind-the-scenes to reflect what is going on screen. WME Tanya Cohen told the Hollywood Reporter that film studios are being more aware of the current social climate and want to tell stories from an authentic point of view.

“People are very aware of the optics of authenticity. Since the pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests, there’s been a real shift, and studios are increasingly being conscious and judicious about finding the voices to tell a story from a very authentic point of view.”

This is the second time Marvel’s star daywalker will appear on the big screen. Wesley Snipes played the titular character in a trilogy of films, BladeBlade II, and Blade: Trinity from 1998 to 2004. It is currently unclear if the reboot will be a standalone film or be a part of Phase 5 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
