As it was previously reported, Marques Houston appeared on TV One’s Uncensored series where he finally addressed all the criticism over his 18-year age gap with his 22-year-old wife, Miya Dickey, who he met when she was 17.
The singer previously explained on the show, “Me and my wife’s situation is a little different. When I met my wife, she was 17. So, we had no real conversation, no real connection until, you know, she was of age.” Houston continued to defend himself against the backlash in a new exclusive interview with PageSix.
While speaking with journalist Tashara Jones, Houston also opened up about the struggle he had dealing with women his age, which he claims sometimes came with “baggage.”
He even shared what it was like dating before he met his “heart,” Miya, and what he stayed away from when he was looking for love at the time: “A red flag to me [was] always with a woman that had a kid,” he told Page Six. “Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me.” He added, “I tip my hat and respect women that are raising children on their own. But when I grew up, I never really wanted to have kids.”
He went on to elaborate, “I would talk to my dad a lot, and he would always tell me to have your own kids because you never know what the baby daddies are about. So if you’re gonna have kids…make sure it is with a woman that never had kids. So that was always my red flag… and a woman with an attitude. I don’t like women with funky attitudes,” he told Jones.
Deeper into the conversation, he broke it down even more. He said, “Women that are my age… they kind of have a different outlook on life. Like a lot of women, my age are very independent. They are very like, ‘I don’t need a man to do this for me ’cause I can do it for myself.’ I come from a generation that I love to provide for my wife.”
He added, “There’s a lot of women my age I’ve dated, they may have baggage. They may have kids, they may not. There’s so many different women I’ve been with throughout my life, and it just so happens to be that this one [Miya] caught my heart.” He continued, “Everything that I prayed for — and everything that I wanted in a woman — she came with. Although she was young, I’m young in spirit.”
More On Marques Houston
Houston doesn’t seem to be fazed about the online commotion. Just last week he chopped it up with TMZ and shared how blessed he is to have his own little family.
“Everybody has their own opinion–opinions are like noses, everyone has one,” he told TMZ. “I’m not the kinda person who cares what people think about me. So, say what you want. I’m happily married, I love my wife, we have a beautiful daughter and that’s how we living.”
Houston said Dickey was 19 when they reportedly tied the knot married. The couple later welcomed their first child in 2021.
