Marlon Wayans is reflecting on his 2004 flick, “White Chicks,” and shared his thoughts on whether a movie of such kind would have had the same type of success today as it did almost 20 years ago. For those who haven’t seen the film, Marlon and his brother, Shawn Wayans, star as two undercover FBI agents whose mission is to protect hotel heiresses, The Wilson sisters, from being kidnapped.

Some would say the movie is filled with a lot of stereotypes, with the Wayans brothers spending most of the movie dressed as “white chicks” themselves. And while the comedy is deemed a cult classic to most, in a recent interview with BuzzFeed, the 50-year-old touched on whether films of this particular nature would still find a market in today’s cancel culture.

“I think they’re needed. I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled,” he told the publication. “If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor. It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore. I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks.”

There have been talks for years that a sequel was said to have been in development, with both Shawn and Marlon keen on reprising their roles as Kevin and Marcus Copeland. And while the brothers have yet to address what’s been the hold-up in getting a second installment out to the public, some believe that a film that’s very stereotypical to that extent wouldn’t be deemed acceptable with society today.

Marlon continued to tell BuzzFeed that if he doesn’t get the funding for the movies he wants to create, he will “find a way” to make it happen. “I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”

“White Chicks,” which was distributed by Sony Pictures and produced by Columbia Pictures, went on to gross $131.1 million at the worldwide box office with a budget of $37 million. Even at the time of the release, some regarded the movie to have been rather controversial, with critics harshly criticizing the movie’s plot, yet it was still a commercial hit, with fans insisting that a sequel is long overdue at this point.
