A Dutch man who was visiting South Africa on vacation required reconstructive surgery after a cobra bit him in the penis.

The Urology Case Report documented the 47-year-old man’s medical emergency where he experience scrotal necrosis after the snouted cobra bit him while sitting in a toilet bowl. He was transported via helicopter to the nearest medical center which was 220 miles so his genitals could be saved.
“During this time, he felt a burning sensation in his genitals and a pain that ascended through his groin to his flank, upper chest, and abdomen. He also reported vomiting but no neurological symptoms.” the article reads.

The man was given antibiotics and other medication five hours after the vicious bite and he was admitted to the ICU for observation. He also required hemodialysis due to acute kidney injury before undergoing reconstructive surgery as reported by the New York Post.
After a week, his genitals started to show signs of recovery and he was later transported to the Netherlands for further treatment. A plastic surgeon took a skin graft from his groin to place it over the penis after performing a “penile shaft debridement, with extensive resection of dead tissue extending into the corpus spongiosum to the fold of the preputium.”
