An elderly Walmart employee and military veteran finally retired after a kind customer uploaded a viral TikTok video to help raise money for him.

Maryland resident Butch Marion,82, worked full-time as a cashier at a local Walmart in Cumberland when he encountered Rory McCarty, McCarty went to the store to purchase some batteries but said he was inspired by a video where a woman helped raise money for a Walmart employee. McCarty created a TikTok video showing Marion working behind the counter and the clip earned over a million views.

Marion worked at General Motors but retired to look after his ex-wife’s husband and when he passed away, he also cared for his ex-wife. McCarty launched the GoFundMe on December 18th and so far, it received $118,575 from over 5,000 donors.

Every penny will go to Butch. Janette, the daughter of Butch, has confirmed that I can withdraw the funds on behalf of her father and send them outside of GoFundMe. Once that happens, I will be hand delivering Warren Marion (Butch) a cashier check for the full amount given after the GoFundMe fee is subtracted,’ McCarty said on the fundraiser page.

After his ex-wife passed away, Marion decided to work at Walmart but he finally retired on Wednesday after receiving his $108,000 check. He said the money will go to visiting his daughter and grandchildren in Florida plus paying off his bills.
