Rene Martinez Gutierrez, 46, lived peacefully in Peru as a family man and has no criminal record, according to Oddity Central. He was arrested three times in the last thirteen years, however, because he shares the same name as a Peruvian drug dealer with multiple arrest warrants in the country and internationally. Gutierrez was arrested the last time he returned to Colombia to visit his father, and he was approached by officers as he arrived at the airport. He has been jailed ever since.

The first arrest happened in 2010, when he went to a local police station in Bogota to request his judicial record in order to open a business. When police checked the records, they discovered that Gutierrez had an international arrest record in Peru, indicating that he had been wrongfully detained. Despite being released, Gutierrez went to the Peruvian Embassy to find out why he had been arrested. Officials said they didn’t know why he was arrested, but they assumed it was because he had the same name as a well-known criminal.

“His name and date of birth coincided with a person they were looking for being an accomplice of a man who was carrying 20 kilos of heated cocaine on a television in Peru in 2006. I almost died. Then, they gave me his wallet, his cell phone and the wedding ring and they took him to the dungeons,”

Unfortunately, he was arrested upon his arrival at the airport and Gutierrez father passed away while he was locked up in jail. He is currently waiting for Peruvian authorities to extradite him to they can confirm he is not the infamous drug cartel leader than authorities are looking for.

His brother told Noticias Caracol that he has been deprived of his rights by Colombian authorities. “My brother was captured directly with an extradition order directly requested by Peru,” he explained. His sister said they didn’t give him the opportunity to defend his rights and a Facebook group has been created to spread the word about his case.

“They didn’t give him the opportunity on Saturday that he arrived in the early morning of arriving in Colombia, on the plane they asked for his ID, Interpol entered and stopped my brother,”
