Amou Haji (Uncle Haji) didn’t use soap and water for decades after fearing he would make him sick. He resided in the southern province of Fars and avoided multiple attempts by other residents to help him take a bath. However, Haji was convinced to take a bath several months ago but became ill shortly after and died on Sunday.
During an interview with the Tehran Times in 2014, Haji said he didn’t bathe due to an “emotional setback” in his youth. His diet consisted of rotten meat and unclean water from an old oil can. According to the BBC, he became sad whenever someone offered to bathe him or offered him clean water.

Social media users were stunned by Haji’s images as news of his death went viral on Instagram and Twitter.
The BBC said in their report that it was unclear if Haji held the world record for not taking a bath, but there was another case of a man in India who didn’t bathe or brush his teeth in 2009. However, an update on his whereabouts is unknown.
