The man, identified as Zhang, contacted his daughter multiple times after he ended up in a car accident and attempted to convince her to drop out of university to take care of him. However, after several attempts, the young woman blocked Zhang’s number, and he filed a complaint with the local family court. In the request, he asked for 1,500 yuan($216) a month in alimony since Article 26 of China’s Civil Code requests all adults to be fully obligated to support and protect their parents, as reported by Oddity Central.
Zhang stated he wanted his daughter to put her education on hold and help him. The young woman explained that her university requirements do not allow her to drop everything quickly and help him; she has two other brothers who can help.

The young woman also said she doesn’t have the funds to support her father and feels physically and mentally exhausted from all the pressure.
“I’m still in college, and I can’t afford my father’s alimony,” the young woman said. “I don’t have time to go back to take care of him and besides, I have two older brothers who could care for him, so I should have to come back. I blocked my father’s phone number, but only because all of his messages were complaints, which made me even more nervous and stressed than I usually was because of studying and exams. I felt even more exhausted, both mentally and physically.”
Court officials sympathized with the woman’s situation as they noted she was still in school and afford the alimony payments. However, they told her she should be more empathetic to her father’s situation without giving up on her studies. Zhang is planning to file an appeal.
A similar lawsuit happened when a young woman’s parents sued their daughter for not buying her brother an apartment.
Another couple in China attempted to sue their daughter, despite abandoning her as a toddler and said she was obligated to help pay for her brother’s apartment. They sued for 500,000 yuan($72,000) in parental maintenance. Although the verdict states she was not obligated to help her brother, she was legally required to help her parents. The young woman was abandoned when she was two, and her aunt raised her alone. She used some of her savings to help her cousin to purchase an apartment.
The court ruled she needed to negotiate a price with her parents so they could settle on a payment schedule for the apartment. The case received different opinions on social media as they were critical of the woman’s biological parents.
