A Chilean man reportedly resigned from his job and disappeared after his employer mistakenly paid him 286 times his wages.

The unidentified man is currently nowhere to be found after he promised to give the money back. On May 30, his employer Cial,, accidentally paid him 165,398, 851 Chilean pesos(70,126.80 USD) instead of his standard wage of 500,000 Chilean pesos(536.15 USD). His manager noticed the mistake and asked the former employee to pay back the extra cash. Despite making the promise based on messages on WhatsApp, the former employee didn’t answer.
However, he said the following that he woke up late and that he would go to the bank as reported by Diario Financiero. “He was informed and clarified that this money did not correspond to the payment of any service,” the criminal complaint reads.

On June 2, the former employee sent his resignation letter through a lawyer to the meat company, leading them to file a complaint against him for misappropriation. So far, no arrests have been made.
News of the man’s overpayment and resignation went viral on social media where people exclaimed they would’ve made the same choice if they were in the same predicament.

A similar incident took place in Japan when a covid relief fund was accidentally sent to a man’s home
In May, a Japanese man was accidentally sent his town’s entire COVID relief fund of 46,300,000 yen(343,407 USD). However, he gambled all the money within two weeks on his smartphone within two weeks. The accident occurred due to the government added the man’s name to the top of the town’s list of account information as reported by the Mirror.
24-year-old Sho Taguchi resided in Yamaguchi Prefecture and added that he spent the money in multiple overseas casinos but claimed he was going to repay the small sum in small increments. He was also arrested for the incident and later charged with fraud.
“All the funds had been transferred to an account at another financial institution, I cannot return the money back to the original account. I will make amends for my crime.”
